Walking in the Company of the Baptized: Series A Gospels for Lent 2023: Instructor: Dr. Fred Niedner, Senior Research Professor, Valparaiso University’s Institute of Liturgical Studies

Series A gospel lessons reflect the church’s ancient practice of catechizing during Lent in preparation for baptism, perhaps at the Vigil of Easter. In sequence, Matthew takes us first to the wilderness, where Jesus is put to the test as we are, and we end up with Matthew in Jerusalem, singing at first but later screaming with the crowds, “His blood be on us and on our children.” In between, we find ourselves among the characters in John’s gospel – in the womb with Nicodemus, at the well with a Samaritan woman, adrift with a man born blind, and entombed with Lazarus and his grieving sisters. We, too, will be born anew, betrothed to the heavenly bridegroom, sighted like never before, and unloosed for good from our grave clothes.

The classes will be taught via Zoom on Monday mornings from 10:00 – 11:00 am Central Time on February 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2023 via Zoom. Registration Fee: $45
